How to Freshen a Stinky Trashcan – Naturally!

I’d had it and finally decided to nail down a routine on how to freshen a stinky trashcan and do it naturally.

To freshen your stinky trash can, you need the following:

1. All Natural All Purpose Cleaner

What you need:

  • ½ cup Vinegar
  • 2 Cups of Isopropyl Alcohol
  • 1 tsp Dish Soap {I use Mrs. Meyers, but you can use Castile soap if you prefer}
  • 10-20  drops of lavender, tea tree or peppermint essential oils {or a mixture}
  • Enough Distilled Water to Make a Gallon
  • An empty jug – I used a leftover Orange Juice jug
  • Empty Spray Bottle

How to make this All Natural All Purpose Household Cleaner

  • First, mix your vinegar, alcohol and dish soap.
  • Pour into the empty gallon container.
  • Add your essential oils.  Oh, they smell so yummy!
  • I use essential oils from Mountain Rose Herbs. They are wonderful and VERY reasonable compared to some other oils I’ve seen! I used a combo of peppermint and lavender, my two favs.
  • Shake to combine and then add enough distilled water to make a gallon.
  • Shake again to combine.  Then, fill up your empty spray bottle and go to town!

2. All Natural Deodorizer

What you need:

  • Simply measure out your baking soda into a bowl and add your essential oils.

  • Stir to combine making sure you don’t have any clumps of oil.  Just crush around with your spoon as you stir it up.
  • Then spoon it into a giant Ball Mason Jar.  I got mine at Michaels for about $5 using my coupon.

3.Paper Towels

First take the All Natural All Purpose Cleaner and spray the inside of your trash can.

Obviously, you need to take the bag out first and throw it away.  Our trash can has that big plastic insert. I’m a fan…I think.  I’m sure I could do without it, but there is something about it that makes me happy.

Yuck. That’s all so dirty and gross.

Like I said before I got distracted with the utter nastiness of my trash can, spray the inside and wipe it out really good.

Next, we’re going to make a deodorizing burrito out of the All Natural Basic Deodorizer and some paper towels.how to freshen a stinky trashcan

Lay a few paper towels out on your counter and spread some of the mix on one of them.

Then, fold the sides in about an inch and roll up the paper towels.

Like so.  This is probably the first Deodorizing Burrito you’ve ever seen. You’re welcome. 🙂

Pop the burrito in the bottom of your can and grab a trash bag.

Shake it up, baby.  {if you want, you can twist and shout, too.  I won’t tell anyone.}

This will help keep you bag fresh too.  We used to use those smelly bags, but they were just toooooo much.

This way, it’s subtle and fresh and actually soaks up the stinky odors…naturally!
